Rhodes, from the Greek Ῥόδος (Rodos, pronounced: Hròdos), is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and the easternmost of the major Aegean islands; the southeastern side is wet from the East Sea. It is located approximately 17.7 km from the coasts of Turkey. The population amounts to about 130,000 people (2004), of which about 60-70,000 reside in the city of Rhodes, the major center. Rhodes was the capital of the Dodecanese prefecture, which also included the nearby islands of Simi, Piscopi, Calchi and Castelrosso. Historically, it was famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue of the god Helios, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The medieval city is considered a world heritage site.
